PROJECT BRIEF
This was a professional graphic design project done individually during a COOP term for the company SAP. I was hired as a Film & Marketing intern and thus made most of the creative decisions for graphical and media based marketing materials. I was tasked with designing an infographic that promoted the Top 10 Reasons to Choose SAP BusinessObjects Predictive Analytics. This is a software that provides predictive insights for business processes and applications using a factory approach. This was part of a series that consisted of an animation, presentations and a whitepaper.
ABOUT THE CLIENT
SAP is a German company that creates enterprise software, analytics and mobile solutions that helps other small and large companies manage their businesses. Examples can include inventory management, production planning and order entry. SAP has been active since 1972 and has offices in 130 countries, serving 335,000 customers in 190 countries. The department that I work in is called Global Analytics Marketing, located in Waterloo, Ontario. This department focuses on marketing analytics solutions, including predictive analytics, business intelligence, data visualization, and enterprise planning.
PROCESS
: Design Rationale
As this was part of a series, the majority of the graphics were recycled from its parent document. Designing this was a bit difficult as it is a static image however, it was important to show a continuous flow from one point to the next. Thus, comparing it to the animated version, I did not have the ease of dynamically morphing unlikely objects together. This meant that I had to be more creative in order to create a sense of flow. Another thing that made it difficult was that with the final graphics, many of them to not link easily together and I was very fixed on following the original concepts religiously. Thus, it was noted that it is fine for me to branch out of the original concept.
From the first version, I designed it with a very linear flow and remained closed to the original animation. However, a more dynamic and asymmetrical layout was desired.
For the second version, I attempted that using hexagon borders. The borders were to group related content together as otherwise; they would seem unordered. However, it was noted that the borders restricted the flow from one graphic to the next. Meaning that it was more desired that the graphics were able to transition from each other.
From there onwards, transitions between the graphics were worked on such as from points 2-4. Attempts were a smooth leading line, then geolocation droplets, then parachutes as transitions.
Another section would be from points 7-10. Originally, 8 and 9 were similar which did not help much for transitions. Thus, 8 was changed into a database graphic to represent the SAP HANA software; with a triangle linkage between them.
