PROJECT BRIEF
This was an individual academic project for a magazine publishing course. The goal of this project was to recreate an existing editorial for a chosen magazine. The second part was to create some social media promotions for the editorial.
ABOUT THE CLIENT
I chose to create an editorial for The Fight Magazine, an LA-based LGBT magazine that speaks about more than the surface issues in the LGBT community from the art world, culture and news. The editorial I chose to redesign was about the pop-artist Trevor Wayne.
PROCESS
: Art Direction - Print Adaptation
Analyzing the original editorial layout by The Fight Magazine, I felt that they did not highlight the artist, Trevor Wayne’s artwork and personality well. Therefore, with the redesign I utilize the artist’s style to inspire the art direction. Since he does pop art, limiting the colours to CMYK seemed appropriate while having simple graphics. However, a brick red was used for the headlines because it is the magazine’s branding colour. The yellow arrows are to direct the reader to text and across the spreads. I elongated the editorial by using more photos which is also to showcase Wayne’s work.
PROCESS
: Digital Adaptation
For the digital adaptation, I found an interview video of Trevor Wayne by CCTV America on YouTube. I thought that this would be a good extension of the print interview since it provides more info on the artist. It also shows more of the Wayne’s art processes. I utilized The Fight Magazine’s Twitter and Facebook account to mock the post. The tagline of “insert banana” is inspired by Wayne’s Horror Banana series since he replaces horror items in famous horror movies with a banana to make it comical. For both of them, I used my own accounts to tweet and post the link in order to get the layout.
