A trend forecasting project where we later had to design a mini collection using one of the trends for a brand of our choice. In this case, I chose the skate and surf streetwear brand Stüssy.
My Role
■ Creative Director, Fashion Designer, Illustrator, Technical Designer, Graphic Designer, Trend Forecaster, Concept Designer
For this school project, we were tasked with forecasting two trends, and then design a collection for a brand of our choice using one of two forecasted trends. The brand that I chose to design for was Stüssy, a skate and surf streetwear brand. See above for the project slides, designs, illustrations and technical flats. Below, I have written out the Trend Descriptions, Key Details, Trend's Target Customer, Where the Trend Sits on the Trend Curve, and Key Brands that May Adopt this Trend.
DIGITALIZATION
Trend Description This trend is all about incorporating the digital. Now that we are all more than ever online, having a fashion presence that transcends the physical and digital space is needed. Silhouettes need to be larger than life for onscreen impact. Think oversized, boxy, and voluminous. The large size will help stand out on camera, and it will act as a canvas for digital art. Prints will have a digitally filtered, ombre, and cut-and-paste look. Imagine computer static, glitches, and photoshopped elements. Collaborating with artists will also lend well to this trend as there is a movement for crypto art. Artists and celebrities are exploring this new digital space as a means for more control over the ownership and sale of their art. This means that people are increasingly interested in where art comes from, thereby hinting that collaborating with emerging artists and utilizing the digital aesthetic will be key to SS22.
Key Details
Digitally rendered prints and graphics.
Oversized, larger than life for on-screen impact.
Collaborate with artists. Usage of this trend can be applied to print design for shirts, cut and sew, activewear, woven separates, knitwear, accessories. Garments can be designed with oversized silhouettes.
Trend's Target Customer The trend’s target customers are people aged 20 - 30. It is definitely for those who are digitally savvy and are early adopters as crypto art is still relatively new. Many celebrities like Halsey and Grimes are releasing crypto art for sale which would attract many of their young fans.
Where the Trend Sits on the Trend Curve Innovators and early adopters.
Key Brands that may Adopt this Trend Rick Owens, Iris Van Herpen, Marine Serre, Moncler, Stüssy. These brands have a reputation to be more avant-garde, with their silhouette, colours, prints, texture and fabrication. Van Herpen frequently experiments with 3D printing and new technology in general to create her ethereal designs. Owens has consistently shown futuristic silhouettes, styling and clothes on his runway. Serre has also shown a unique silhouette, but also her use of patterns may benefit from a digital filter. Moncler is frequently collaborating with other designers. Stussy has often played with prints and colours with a relaxed fit to their skate and surf-inspired clothing. Thus, making this trend something that they could incorporate for their existing target market.
PUNK'S NOT DEAD
Trend Description This trend is about the recurrence of punk. In September 2020, Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) released his fifth studio album called “Tickets to my Downfall”. This was a guitar-driven pop-punk album which was a clear departure from his established rap career and has made headlines due to its wildly successful transition. It is the first rock album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in over a year. Thanks to his success, many are touting this to be the start of the resurgence of pop-punk since the early 2000s. Other than MGK, many other artists are making the transition in to punk. Maggie Lindemann whos breakout single was “Pretty Girl”, released her first EP titled “Paranoia” on January 2021. This as well is a departure from her sweet pop sound into punk. Another notable artist to make headlines for her transition is Grace Vanderwaal. She was the winner of America’s Got Talent 2016 season 11. She was cute, quirky, wrote her own songs and played the ukelele. Fast forward to 2021, she debued a brand new look and sound, departing from her whimsical, folky style to an edgier, punk style with her latest single “Don’t Assume What You Don’t Know”. Avril Lavigne has also been making more appearances lately. In the fashion world, many designers are utilizing the leather biker jacket, chunky military boots and the red tartan, which are eponymous to the punk aesthetic. Many of the celebrities associated with punk have also been seen sporting the red and black colour combo such as Yungblud’s hair, Lindemann’s EP cover, and Vanderwaal’s single cover art. Punk is back for SS22.
Key Details
Leather biker jackets.
Red tartan.
Chunky military boots. Usage of this trend can be seen through print design. The tartan can be applied as a pattern for woven tops and bottoms. Leather biker jackets can be applied to collections to give an edge or to inspire other leather garments to further push the punk aesthetic. Finally chunk military boots can inspire chunky accessories and hardware details such as buckles, chains, and pins.
Trend's Target Customer The trend’s target customers are people aged 18 - 28. With many celebrities emerging into the pop-punk scene, many young fans will follow suit. However, those who grew up in the early 2000s may also revisit the trend as some of the punk personalities of that time are making comebacks, such as Avril Lavigne.
Where the Trend Sits on the Trend Curve Early adopters and the early majority.
Key Brands that may Adopt this Trend Jeremy Scott, Alexander McQueen, Molly Goddard. These designers have a rebellious spirit each on their own. Scott may utilize this trend to create a playful take on punk, as many of his past designs were outlandish. McQueen has always pushed boundaries, shocking the audience through storytelling and avant-garde silhouette. Molly Goddard could also benefit by adding the playful into the punk spirit through her use of voluminous and colourful textures.
